Tony Sunga
Assistant Volleyball Coach

Tony Sunga, Simpson’s Assistant Volleyball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, will assist with all camp sessions. Sunga joined the Simpson volleyball staff as an assistant coach in April, 2013.

A veteran coach, Sunga brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to Simpson, ranging from high school and club volleyball to the NCAA Division 1 level. Sunga previously was the Head Volleyball Coach at Drake University for two seasons (2011-2013) and served as an Assistant Coach at the University of Wyoming (2008-10). He also had served at Simpson as an assistant coach early in his coaching career. 

Sunga has a wealth of experience as a teacher of the game and an experienced recruiter in Iowa and the Midwest. During his tenure as Drake University, he coached three, All-MVC Scholar-Athletes. Sunga achieved three very successful seasons at University of Wyoming, helping to transform the Cowgirls into a contender in the Mountain West, progressing from a total of five victories in 2008 to 22 in 2010.

Sunga has remained active with the Iowa Region USA Volleyball both as a club coach and as a consultant and head coach in the Iowa High Performance volleyball program. Recently serving as the co-coach in the Central Iowa Select Volleyball Club, Sunga and Smith led their teams to three consecutive USA Volleyball Junior National Championships, winning the 18’s National Division Championship in 2014 and the 16’s American Division Championship in 2012.

Additional coaching experiences in Sunga’s accomplished career also include service as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Drake University (2005-08), volunteer assistant for Iowa State (2004), Simpson Volleyball Assistant Coach (1993-1997), Simpson Basketball Assistant Coach (1996-2000), and Head Volleyball Coach at Des Moines Lincoln High School (2001-04) and Hoover High School (1992-93). Sunga’s earlier accomplishments at Simpson, assisting under hall of fame coach Shelley (Scott) O’Meara, included an Iowa Conference Championship in 1994 and NCAA Tournament berths in 1994 and 1997. In basketball, serving under current Head Coach and Athletic Director, Brian Niemuth, Sunga helped the Storm to three straight conference titles (1998-2000) and bids to the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2000.

Sunga and his wife Melissa have three sons: Michael, Phillip and Daniel.

Heidi Brooks
Net Fest Camp Coach

Heidi Brooks is a lead coach for the Net Fest Juniors volleyball camp.  She previously served as a Simpson Assistant Coach for four seasons and also the Head Volleyball Coach at Indianola High School for several years. A 5th grade elementary school teacher in Indianola, Coach Heidi is passionate about youth volleyball.  Her leadership, enthusiasm, and unique ability to relate to the younger players promote a highly successful camp experience.




Barb Overton
Volleyball Assistant & Camp Coordinator / Marketing Assistant

Barb Overton has served an assistant on the Simpson Volleyball staff for 19 years. A longtime coach and professional educator, Overton has made outstanding contributions to Simpson College while serving a range of roles – coach, physical educator, director, marketing assistant, administrator, fundraiser, and community leader.

Overton's impact on Simpson College spans decades, dating back to 1965 when she began her Simpson career as a professor in the physical education department. During her time in Indianola, Overton served as head of the physical education department, directed the Women's Recreation Association and began the foundation for the organization of a women's intercollegiate athletic program.

Overton was the first varsity softball coach in Simpson history, helped create the varsity volleyball program and also spent time coaching golf and tennis.

Overton's years of service to Simpson College were recognized in 2012 when she earned the Dick Buxton Award at the annual Red & Gold Celebration. The award is given to a member of the community who willingly gives time and effort in support of athletics at the College.

Prior to joining the squad, she was head volleyball coach at Indianola High School in 1998 where she led the Indians to a conference championship, a regional berth and a 33-9-2 record. She was also Lana Smith's assistant for the Indians from 1990-98.

In addition to her coaching duties, Overton is a member of the Iowa AAU State Board, serves as Simpson's Athletic Marketing Assistant and provides leadership for the Simpson College Athletic Benefit.

Overton serves as the camp coordinator for Simpson Volleyball Camps. Based upon her years of experience as a volleyball coach and enthusiast, she provides leadership in coordinating a camp schedule while will be fun and a positive experience for players and coaches. Simpson Volleyball Camps are fine tuned each year to promote a reputation which is best in the state.
