Head Coach and Camp Director
Lana Smith, Head Volleyball Coach, has built one of the top programs in the Iowa Conference during her 18 years at Simpson College. Under her leadership Simpson Volleyball has achieved regional and national success. Her accomplishments include a 326-306 career record at Simpson, two Iowa Conference championships (2006, 2009) and three NCAA National Tournaments (2006, 2008, 2009).
Smith also serves as Simpson’s Senior Women’s Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director.
During the 2015 season, Smith was recognized as AVCA Victory Club honoree, achieving 300+ collegiate volleyball match wins. She earned career win No. 300 at the IIAC-NAAC Crossover Challenge during Simpson’s match with Marian, Wisc. (Sept. 15, 2016.)
During her tenure at Simpson, Smith has coached two Iowa Conference MVP’s, four All-Americans, seven all-region performers, and 17 first team-all conference honorees. In 2006, she led the Storm to the program’s first Iowa Conference Championship since 1994, as co-champion during the regular season, and the first ever Iowa Conference Tournament title. In 2001, she earned Iowa Conference Coach of the Year honors as Simpson ended Central’s 56-match Iowa Conference winning streak. Smith served as an assistant Coach at Simpson in 1998.
Smith put together one of the best seasons in program history in 2009, leading the Storm to their first outright Iowa Conference Championship in fifteen years. Simpson finished the season 21-14 overall and completed the conference season with only one loss, going 7-1. The Storm then cruised through the IIAC Tournament to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
Prior to taking over at Simpson, Smith compiled a 243-89 record in nine years at Indianola High School team, winning five conference titles and making four state tournament appearances. Smith was the founder of the Power Force Volleyball Club in 1990 and coached the program from 1990-1997. More recently, (2012-14) Smith served as the Co-head Coach of the Central Iowa Select Volleyball Club along with Simpson Volleyball Assistant Tony Sunga. Together Smith and Sunga led their teams to three consecutive USA Junior National Championship, winning the 16’s American Division Championship in 2012 and 18’s National Division Championship in 2014.
Smith competed collegiately at the University of Iowa (1983-86) and remains among the top 15 in Hawkeye history in blocks (271) kills (918), and service aces (87). Smith served as team captain as a senior.
Smith serves as the director for Simpson College Volleyball Camps. With her wealth of experiences as a highly successful collegiate, high school and Iowa Region club volleyball coach, she has exceptional skills in facilitating camp sessions. She is able to closely relate to the challenges of today’s competitive high school volleyball programs.
